The right to education, the right to vocational training, and freedom from corporal punishment are among the rights that are foreseen for children in correctional centers in our country, but many other rights are not properly guaranteed in such institutions. The principle of keeping the child for the shortest appropriate time, the principle of classifying children based on physical, age, and personality characteristics, the principle of prioritizing the child's reformation and resocialization, the principle of creating the smallest possible distance between the child and society (the world outside the institution), and the principle of prioritizing the child's interests over social defense are the most important principles that must be observed in depriving children of their freedom in terms of international regulations. The principles of the correctional and adolescents in as separate custody of children and adults except in cases of the child's best interests, disciplinary and protective regulations, regulations related to the cultural and educational rights of the child and regulations on health, nutrition, physical education and protection of the child's health and well-being are largely in line with the rules for the protection of children deprived of their liberty in the Beijing and Havana Rules. The main weaknesses and shortcomings in correctional and educational centers in Iran include the lack of a proper mechanism for monitoring the centers, lack of facilities, creating a distance between the child and the world outside the institution, and some severe and inappropriate disciplinary punishments that are not consistent with international standards and norms.
