The inefficiency and reliance on traditional approaches to criminal punishment, along with the undesirable consequences it has had on the interaction between the victim and the offender, has pushed the criminal system towards alternative methods based on the interaction of the parties and resolving disputes in a peaceful manner. In the meantime, criminal mediation, as one of the manifestations of restorative justice, aims to prevent a sense of revenge and violence among the victim and the offender, and considers a mechanism that can resolve the dispute and minimize the turbidity and disputes resulting from the criminal act. In international documents, there are numerous criminal mediation tools that seek to avoid resorting to criminal authorities and courts and reduce referrals to them. The purpose of the present study is to examine the role of mediation in preventing violence and revenge in the light of international documents. The results of the study showed that criminal mediation creates a mechanism for preventing violence and revenge in criminal cases by supporting the responsibility and awareness of the victim and the offender, playing the role of a third party and mediator without issuing a binding verdict, providing conditions for participation and exchanging views and opinions between the parties to the lawsuit, encouraging the offender to apologize and the victim to forgive, and promoting a humane and dignified view of the offender.
